Learning to Create with AI

Companion position paper for Learning with AI, bibkey hyman2026creative, dated September 2026 (built 2026-09-20 against book v5.1.2; revised 2026-09-22). Full title: Learning to Create with AI: Disciplines for Deep Learning, Critical Inquiry, and Creative Thought.

It extends the book’s Learning Spiral to creative inquiry. Six disciplines for deep learning, critical inquiry, and inventive thought are adapted to an environment where a fluent generative system is always available, and a cross-cutting navigation layer, the Next-Move Check for students and the Next-Move Memo for instructors, addresses how to choose a high-value next move once inquiry branches. The paper uses the book’s CAT vocabulary (Core Competence, AI-assisted Practice, Trustworthiness) and its four assignment categories rather than introducing a competing framework, and it separates assisted creative performance from learned creativity, with a transfer-based assessment design that measures the second.
