Notable changes to the Learning with AI book and its companion repository. Most recent first.
Two version lines run through this file. Repository releases are numbered v1.x.y, and each one is
archived with its own Zenodo DOI. That is the number to cite. The book has a separate version line,
v4.x.y, and every release states which book version it carries. Entries below the v1.0.0 release of
2026-07-11 predate the archived releases and are labeled by book version.
v1.21.0 — 2026-08-27 — a dead cross-reference is repaired, the teaching paper reaches v1.7.0, and the self-audit gains the adoption-evidence table
One reader-visible defect is repaired. Since v4.49.3, Section 6.5 of Part I (“What you can expect
from your institution”) pointed its cross-reference at an internal label that does not exist, and print
page 64 read “Part ??” where it should read “Part III”. One token, found at build verification; the
warning had been sitting in the compile log. Listed in ERRATA.md. Book PDF:
book/learning_with_ai_v4_49_4.pdf (249 pages, 124 references). The previous file,
learning_with_ai_v4_49_3.pdf, is removed; the filename carries the version, so links to the old name
will not resolve. The current file is always linked from the main README.
The teaching companion paper advances to v1.7.0. The abstract now leads with the formation
precondition, and the paper cites Weinreich (2026) in both the faculty and administrator sections. The
served filename is unversioned (hyman2026teaching.pdf), so the replacement is in place; the folder
README records the version.
The departmental self-audit gains the adoption-evidence table, ruled at S60 as Z4 and deliberately placed repo-side at zero book pages: the book’s ten commitments, each paired with the artifact that shows it is real rather than claimed. It turns the artifact-per-indicator standard of the Instats Institutional AI Readiness Pack on the book’s own framework.
A correction to the v1.20.0 entry below. Its book-PDF line said “122 references” two paragraphs after correctly counting 124, and the main README carried the same stale figure. Both now read 124.
v1.20.0 — 2026-08-26 — the book catches up, and three cited sources are corrected against themselves
The repository was six book versions behind. It served v4.43.1 at 247 pages while the manuscript had reached v4.49.3 at 249. Every printed path still resolved, so nothing was broken, but readers were reading older text than the author was writing. The cadence is now every minor version.
Three corrections came from reading cited sources at source rather than trusting the record. A sector figure credited to the 2025 EDUCAUSE AI Landscape Study appears nowhere in that study; it is replaced with three figures the study does report. A claim about what students want from their institutions cited nothing and now rests on the one survey that measures demand rather than usage. The AAUP contingent-faculty figures understated the source, counted against a wider denominator than the source uses, and labelled as adjuncts a category the source defines to include part-time lecturers and graduate student employees. All three are listed in ERRATA.md.
One addition. Part III now carries the institution-size divide, which sharpens rather than decorates its argument: the departmental layer matters most where institutional capacity is thinnest.
One citation caught up with its source. A preprint the book cites was published in Communications of the ACM in June 2026; the entry now points at the journal version. This is recorded under Reference status notes in ERRATA.md, which exists for exactly this.
Also in this release, ruled at S60: a positioning citation to the Instats Institutional AI Readiness Pack, a new Part I section on what students can expect from their institution, the fabrication-not-plagiarism classification sentence in the integrity procedure, and a citation for the AI Assessment Scale adoption figures. Two references added, 124 total.

learning_with_ai_v4_43_1.pdf, is removed; the filename carries the version, so links to the old name
will not resolve. The current file is always linked from the main README.
v1.19.0 — 2026-08-20 — the site can serve a directory address, and companion papers are PDFs only
No address ending in a folder name could be opened on this site. Seventeen folders each held a README and none held an index page. On github.com a folder shows its README automatically; a published site has no such rule. Twelve of the paths printed in the book are folder addresses, and they would have failed permanently once the book was in print.
Every folder README now carries a short header naming the page and the address it answers to, which makes it a real page at that address. An earlier attempt the same day listed the READMEs in the site configuration instead; that did not work, and the configuration now records why.
The two companion papers are reachable again, offering the PDF directly and the folder. They had been shown as plain text rather than links.
Their LaTeX source, bibliographies and internal revision notes have been withdrawn. Each folder now holds the PDF and a description. They were the only source files here; the book’s own source is not published in this repository, so keeping theirs was an inconsistency. Both papers will be posted to arXiv before the book is published, and arXiv will be the single version to cite. The revision notes were internal handoff documents written for the author.
The companion papers index has been rewritten so adding a paper is a one-row change, and it lists work in preparation: Designing STEM Textbooks for Readers Who Have AI.
Book updated to v4.43.1, in which the companion papers are cited four times each rather than once, and a sentence stating that the repository holds two of them has been removed, since a printed count would have been wrong once a third exists.
v1.18.1 — 2026-08-20 — book v4.42.1
Carries book v4.42.1, 247 pages, 120 references, replacing v4.42.0.
Completes two changes the previous release had only half made.
The account-configuration template is the piece students copy into their AI settings and keep. Its section on uncertainty already told readers that asking the assistant to flag its own doubts does not remove the need to verify, which is the right instruction with no reason attached. It now carries the reason: nothing in the template makes the AI correct, every setting changes how it responds rather than what it knows, and a configured assistant is as confident when wrong as when right.
The field-experiment figures appear in two places in the book, and only one had been corrected. For two releases the two passages disagreed about the same study. Both now report that the guardrailed tutor produced no exam loss and no exam gain, which is what the source says.
Page count is 247 rather than 245. The added passage falls against a page break, and a second page follows because the next Part opens on a right-hand page. A shorter wording was tried and produced the same count.
v1.18.0 — 2026-08-20 — book v4.42.0
Carries book v4.42.0, 245 pages, 120 references, replacing v4.40.0.
Every example, figure, table and worked dialogue now states its point. Leaving the reader to infer what an example is for is treated as a defect. Four figure captions were corrected against what the figures actually print rather than against their own wording, which is a different check: the opening figure claimed the triangle edges name the three failure modes, and that figure carries no edge labels at all. Two trilemma diagrams had labels that had drifted off the edges they name, and in one the label printed through the line. Takeaway lines were added to the three institutional tables that had only a title, and to the worked dialogues, four of which had run one into the next with nothing said about any of them.
A detailed reading by Warren MacEvoy of Colorado Mesa University prompted a second round, and eight findings from it are in this release.
The student guide now says plainly that configuring an AI changes how it answers, not whether it is right. The tutors in the studies behind the book had the solution to each problem loaded into their prompts, along with the mistakes teachers said students commonly make; a student configuring a general assistant has neither, which is why verification stands in for the answer key rather than being diligence for its own sake.
The effect sizes from the field experiment now carry their scope: three randomly assigned groups in one secondary-mathematics setting, to be read as evidence for a pattern rather than as numbers that will reproduce. The guardrailed arm is now reported as producing no exam loss and no gain, which is what the source says and what the previous wording invited readers to misread.
The student trilemma’s third corner now names real understanding rather than its demonstration, which matches the instructor’s figure and the book’s own argument that performance and competence have come apart. Disclosure now covers work that produces no shareable transcript, where a person steers an automated process over many cycles. The distinction between proof-based and computational work again explains what it changes about AI use. Calibration error, a defined term used throughout the book, now appears in all three glossaries and in the index. And the evidence table’s untested rows now name what would test them, so a department that adopts the framework and records the answers has run the first study of it.
v1.17.0 — 2026-08-19 — book v4.40.0
Carries book v4.40.0, 245 pages, 120 references, replacing v4.39.0.
Every example, figure and table should say what to take from it. Leaving the point to be inferred is treated as a defect, and this release begins that pass through the book and these materials.
Four figure captions were corrected against what the figures actually print, rather than against their own wording. The opening figure claimed the triangle edges name the three failure modes; that figure has no edge labels at all, and the claim had survived every draft because the caption was checked as text and never against the rendered page. Two trilemma diagrams had edge labels that had drifted off their edges, and in one the label printed through the line it sat on; both now compute their label positions from the edges themselves, as the one correct diagram already did. A figure captioned “choosing the assignment color” now says category, which is the word the rest of the book uses.
Takeaway lines were added to the three institutional tables that previously carried only a title, and to six of the eight worked dialogues, four of which had run one into the next with nothing said about any of them.
The four study sessions here now close with a single line naming the framework step they illustrate, in place of a closing paragraph. The physics session also now says, at the point the student first guesses “about half”, why half is the sensible guess: the same push has to move twice the cart. A professional editor reading a summary of that session could not follow where half came from, which is how the gap was found.
v1.16.0 — 2026-08-19 — book v4.39.0
Carries book v4.39.0, 245 pages, 120 references, replacing v4.31.0.
One vocabulary across all three Parts. The book defines its terms in three glossaries, one per Part. Nine terms appearing in more than one of them had drifted apart. Every shared term now opens with the same sentence in every glossary; Part-specific detail follows it rather than replacing it.
The one that mattered most was disclosure. The student guide asked for a clear statement of how AI was used; the institutional framework required the tools used, what they contributed, and how the student verified the result. A student following the student guide would have written a disclosure that fell short of the standard set elsewhere in the same book. The three-component definition now appears in all three Parts, including the instructor guide, which had not defined the term at all.
The academic-integrity procedure is stated once in full. It appeared in three places at differing lengths. A check found that no version contained all of the safeguards the others did: the step that asks an instructor to identify a specific concern rather than a general suspicion appeared only in the shortest version, and the step that records the concern, the evidence, the student’s response and the decision appeared only in the longest. The full procedure is now given once, and the shorter versions are marked as summaries of it and keep both of those steps.
Minimum independent competence now reads as a requirement. The section carried that word in its title while its text recommended rather than required, and the appendices had always stated it as a requirement. The framework and the appendices now agree.
A contents-page defect was corrected, where a Part title had grown long enough that its page number printed against the last word with no space.
Prompted in part by a detailed reading from Joshua Agbomola, whose notes on the appendix count, the contents entry, and consistency between the Parts are reflected above.
v1.15.0 (2026-08-13, book v4.31.0)
Refreshes the public book PDF to v4.31.0, and records a link repair that reached the site on 2026-08-13 without a release entry of its own.
The book. The appendix on ethical AI-assisted scientific writing now states one standard in both places it appears. Its pre-submission checklist asked each author to declare they understand every equation and analysis in the paper; the appendix text three pages earlier said the opposite, that on a multi-author paper the work divides and no single author need hold the whole. The appendix text was rewritten to the collective standard in an earlier revision and the checklist was never brought along. The checklist now asks what each author answers for and who answers for the rest, and asks each author to accept that a question raised about any part of the paper will be investigated and resolved.
The standard itself is now stated against the ICMJE recommendations on authorship, which divide contribution the same way the appendix does while keeping each author’s duty to see questions resolved undivided. Both halves are cited, because the divided half alone would be a partial reading of the source.
The appendix also now opens by saying plainly what it had only implied at its close: AI-assisted work is held to the ordinary standard of scholarly work, and what the tool changes is how hard a lapse is to see, which is why the appendix asks for disclosure and verification rather than for a different standard.

The link repair, released here after the fact. The how to contribute link on the rendered site
resolved to CONTRIBUTING.md and returned the file unrendered, while its neighbour on the same
README line, how to give feedback, rendered correctly. GitHub Pages runs
jekyll-optional-front-matter, which deliberately skips a fixed list of meta files, README,
CONTRIBUTING, CODE_OF_CONDUCT, LICENSE, so a skipped file stays a static file and
jekyll-relative-links leaves links to it unrewritten. FEEDBACK.md, ERRATA.md, FAQ.md, and
CHANGELOG.md are not on that list, so they became pages and their links rewrote to .html. This
was the only affected link in the repository; no link points at LICENSE or CITATION.cff, both of
which the site config excludes. Contributing means opening an issue or a pull request, so the link
now points at the repository copy rather than the rendered copy, and an absolute URL is unaffected
by the link-rewriting plugin either way.
That change was pushed on 2026-08-13 and this file did not record it. The entry appears here rather than as its own release, because a release whose only content is a note about a change already live is a worse record than one entry naming both.

Refreshes the public book PDF to v4.30.17 and corrects the front page to match.
The v4.29.0 PDF staged in v1.12.0 was never uploaded, so this release supersedes that refresh directly: the public PDF moves from v4.23.8 to v4.30.17 in one step. Since v4.29.0 the book gained paragraphs in both guides teaching the presentation of evidence of thinking, a pairing of the two Chapter 4 endpoint prompts into a reusable frame (specify before, audit after), opening questions and in-place exercises in Part I, examiner-consistency guidance for the oral-defense model, two chapter epigraphs, and two acknowledgments. 239 pages, 115 references.

- New:
instructors/syllabus-guide.md, a section-by-section guide to making a whole syllabus AI-ready. The syllabus briefings supply the AI policy paragraph; this guide covers the other syllabus sections AI touches, opens with a collision check for inherited template language that contradicts an AI policy, and adds the section most templates lack entirely: a line disclosing the instructor’s own AI use. instructors/README.mdand the front-page instructor table gain a linked row for the new guide.
v1.12.0 (2026-08-06, book v4.29.0)
Refreshes the book PDF and corrects three claims this repository was making about it.
The book itself changed in four ways since v4.23.8. Every place where text ran past the margin is fixed: ten tables, the bibliography URLs, and a running head that overran on two pages. A bibliography entry that rendered broken is repaired. Sixteen bibliography entries stopped printing the author’s internal working notes to readers. The front matter now routes each reader by naming the problem they arrived with rather than by Part number.
Three corrections in this repository:
CONTRIBUTING.mdprotected seventeen printed paths while the book prints twenty-three. Six were unprotected, including two files a contributor could have renamed in good faith. All twenty-three are now listed.book/README.mdstated the page count as 238. The book is 237, and was 233 at v4.23.8.ERRATA.mdasked readers to report the version from the title page. The draft’s title page carries a build date rather than a version, so it now asks for the version in the PDF filename.

Adds an instructor page on writing problems that run the Learning Spiral, finalizes the contribution timing policy, and refreshes the book from v4.23.3 to v4.23.8.
New: spiral problems.
companion/spiral-problems/carries the recast as a method any course can run: keep the task, open with a commitment, write the ask in, add a second road to the answer, close by opening, and fit the order to the problem. Worked before-and-after pairs from a writing course, a data course, and a first-year lab, a six-question test read as your weakest student would read it, and a twelve-move repertoire of next questions in the Polya tradition. The book states the principle in Part II; this page carries the range one example cannot.- Listed in
companion/README.mdand on the front page beside the other companion materials.
Contribution policy finalized.
- The timing clause in
CONTRIBUTING.mdis settled: until the book is published, contributions that change one of the printed paths are held on a branch and merged after publication; everything else merges normally. The editorial comment carrying the alternatives is removed. - The printed-path list grows from fifteen entries to seventeen, adding

Acts on reviewer feedback about course scope, and refreshes the book from v4.23.2 to v4.23.3.
Course scope now has two dimensions, in the prompts and in the book.
A tutor that stays inside what a course has covered can still answer from the middle of a discipline rather than from the position the course occupies inside it. Asked whether a small symmetric matrix is positive definite, a tool reaches for the determinant test every textbook leads with, which is correct and is not what a course in applied or computational methods wants. Nothing has been skipped, so no existing guard fires.
- The Study Partner Protocol gained a rule: when more than one correct method would work, prefer the one the course would use, and ask what the course is for if the student has not said. Its scope rule now also asks for the syllabus rather than waiting to be told, which had been advice in the notes below the prompt rather than part of the prompt itself.
- The Define Personal Preferences walkthrough carries the same dimension in its course-scope setting.

- A new entry point for readers who are skeptical about these tools and have never used one, pointing at the study sessions. They are annotated transcripts, and you do not have to use AI to need to know what your students are doing with it.

- The worked course case study now opens. The file was always present and correct. It is named
numerical-analysis.mdinsidecompanion/course-case-study/, and the site links to the directory, which had no index page to serve. The directory now has aREADME.mdindex, following the patternstudents/study-sessions/already uses: the index lists the examples and each example keeps its own descriptive filename.numerical-analysis.mdis unchanged and stays, so a second case study can be added beside it without restructuring. - The four top-level directories gained index pages.
students/,instructors/,institutions/, andcompanion/had noREADME.md, so links to the directories themselves did not resolve. Each now lists what it contains, with a one-line description per item.

- Four terms that were used throughout but never defined in the body now carry definitions where a reader first meets them.
- Smaller corrections: an acknowledgment count, three printed repository paths, and section naming in Part III.

Refreshes the book PDF from v4.17.2 to v4.21.2, five book versions, and corrects two things in this repository’s own documentation.

- Front matter trimmed from 25 pages to 17, moving Chapter 1 eight pages earlier and the book from 238 pages to 230. Body page numbers were unaffected.
- Two experiential passages in Part I, one on what AI can carry so that capacity stays available for the work no tool does, and one tracing how a request for help becomes a request for output.
- The sycophancy evidence upgraded from a policy document to the Science research article it describes, with a finding on why asking an AI to be neutral does not produce neutrality.

v1.6.0 (2026-07-29, book v4.17.2)
A correctness release. The v1.5.0 PDF carried seven wrong page numbers in its front matter, and this release replaces it.
- Book PDF updated to v4.17.2 (238 pages, unchanged in length from v4.15.0).
- Seven front-matter page numbers corrected. Six entries in the table of contents and one in the list of tables pointed at the wrong pages. The cause was a build that ran one typesetting pass short, so index output shifted pagination after the front matter had already been written. Every draft from v4.13.1 through v4.17.0 carried the fault, including the v4.15.0 PDF in release v1.5.0. Body text was never affected and the page count was never wrong. If you were navigating Chapter 9 by the table of contents in the previous PDF, that is why the pages did not match.
- Two bibliography entries were printing internal editorial notes. Verification annotations had been written into a field the bibliography style prints rather than one it ignores. Moved. Reader-facing bibliographic detail was kept.
- One acknowledgment sentence tightened. No change of substance.
- Book content otherwise carried forward from v4.15.0 through v4.16.0, v4.17.0, v4.17.1 and v4.17.2: student buy-in evidence in Chapter 8, a named coupling mechanism in the Preface, a narrowed Part II forward pointer, and reviewer acknowledgments. See the version history in the README.
Nothing else in the repository changes. The companion materials are unaffected.
v1.5.0 (2026-07-29, book v4.15.0)
The catch-up release. The repository PDF had fallen four major versions behind the manuscript, so this release carries the book forward from v3.14.0 to v4.15.0 in one step. Nothing else in the repository changes.
- Book PDF updated to v4.15.0 (238 pages, up from 228). The largest single change is in the scientific-writing appendix, where verification moved from an individual standard to a collective one: authors hold responsibility together, each essential part has a qualified owner, and no single author needs to understand the whole. The hard floor stays, which is that no essential part goes unowned.
- Citation accuracy. Every flagship empirical claim was checked against its primary source. Twenty claims were narrowed to what their sources actually support, and eleven were corrected outright where the book had described a finding the study did not report.
- New evidence and framing. The book now positions its four assignment categories against the AI Assessment Scale, carries an evidence-status table and a departmental self-study, explains why AI produces confident errors rather than only that it does, and answers a published argument that assessment reform belongs at the level of disciplinary societies rather than departments.
- Part II. An automation-bias passage opens the assessment-models chapter, and a seeded-error check joins the instruments.
- Part III. A reviewer response on faculty paid by the course: where attendance is unpaid time, the artifacts have to carry the whole load.
- Index rebuilt, 221 entries to 262. A senior reviewer asked four questions the book already answered and could not find the answers, because the index was built on the author’s vocabulary rather than on the questions readers arrive with. Entries now cover the problem a recommendation solves, not only the name of the solution.
v1.4.0 (2026-07-19, book v3.14.0)
The judgment release, prompted by a reader’s question. The book already taught students to sense that a result is wrong before locating the error. This adds the harder direction: interrogating a result that is right.
- Book PDF updated to v3.14.0 (228 pages). Part I’s verification section gains a paragraph on which assumption an answer actually depends on, using a statistical test as the example, since a test run on data that violates independence returns a number that looks exactly like a valid one. The verification checklist now asks which assumptions the answer rests on, not only whether they were identified.
- companion/course-case-study/: two new questions in the worked numerical-analysis course. An essentiality question in the iterative-methods assignment, asking whether positive definiteness is essential or convenient and what the weakest sufficient condition is; and a counterfactual prediction in the computational project, asking students to predict what happens to the observed order of convergence when smoothness fails, then test it.

Having found the flaw in a causal claim, the student states what the conclusion rested on, and the session gives the reader the portable question: which assumption here is essential, and which is only convenient?

- Keeping an AI tutor inside your course. AI tutors reach for the most efficient method they know, which is often one the course has not taught yet. The book now shows students how to give the tutor a map (the syllabus or table of contents) and a pin (where the class is now), and shows instructors how a one-line scope note on an assignment does the job more reliably.
- Office hours as a lost early-warning signal. When students take their questions to a chatbot, instructors lose the informal read on who is struggling. The book now names this and argues for building the signal into the course rather than waiting for the office to fill.
- Student buy-in. Assignment design protects the will to learn but cannot create it, and productive struggle only happens where being wrong feels safe.
- Persistence erosion. A fourth learning-science mechanism: after brief AI use, people not only perform worse once the tool is removed, they also give up sooner.
- Backward diagnosis. Good help sometimes goes backward before it goes forward. If a hint keeps missing, the idea underneath may be the problem.
