Companion papers for Learning with AI

Position papers that develop arguments the book summarizes. Each is a standalone paper with its own audience; none is required to use the book.

Each paper is published here as a PDF. Both existing papers will be posted to arXiv before the book is published, and the arXiv version will be the one to cite once it exists.

Paper Read What it argues
AI and the Next Layer of Human Work PDF  ·  details Powerful tools change what skill means rather than eliminating skill. Six historical cases, and what each implies for students, faculty and administrators. Cited in the book as hyman2026next.
Teaching AI Responsibly to Principled Skeptics PDF  ·  details The case for engaging with AI critically rather than refusing it, written for readers who are not persuaded that AI belongs in a course at all. Cited in the book as hyman2026teaching.

Why only PDFs

LaTeX source, bibliographies and internal revision notes were published here until 2026-08-20 and have been withdrawn. The book’s own source is not in this repository either, so keeping the papers’ source here was an inconsistency rather than a policy. Once a paper is on arXiv, arXiv holds the source and is the single citable version; a second copy here would drift from it with nothing watching.

Corrections and questions go through FEEDBACK.md.
